Frequently Asked Questions

What can acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine help me with?

The holistic treatment approach and techniques used in Chinese medicine can be applied to a wide variety of conditions, from colds and flu to more chronic conditions. Clinical studies have shown that Chinese medicine treatments may be able to assist with:

§  Management of pain such as headache, migraine and lower back pain

§  Management of problems related to some autoimmune disorders and chronic conditions, such as pain, stress and fatigue.

§  Management of nausea and vomiting, for example following chemotherapy or post-surgery

§  Pregnancy related musculoskeletal pain

Clare has particular interest in working with the following broad issues:

§  Pain management (headaches, migraine, musculoskeletal pain, back pain, chronic pain)

§  Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

§  Stress, anxiety and depression

§  Sleep issues

§  Autoimmune conditions (thyroid issues, IBS)

§  Women’s health (menstrual issues, PCOS, endometriosis)

§  Fertility, IVF and pregnancy

In all areas Chinese medicine may be used in consultation with your other treating health practitioners. Clare is always happy to consult with your other health professionals to optimise your treatment.

What should I expect at my first visit?

At the initial consult Clare will ask you a number of questions about your current health and health history, including questions about your diet and lifestyle and any medications or supplements you may be taking. She will also feel your pulse and look at your tongue to allow her to form a complete Chinese medicine diagnosis and personalise your treatment. The treatment may include acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, as well as other techniques such as cupping or gua sha (a form of massage using a smooth edged massaging tool). She will discuss her treatment plan with you and at any time before, during or after the consult, strive to answer any questions or concerns you might have.

What should I wear?

It is best to wear loose fitting clothing, however depending on the acupuncture points used some clothing may need to be removed. Any concerns in this regard can easily be discussed and accommodated. Also, towels and blankets are provided for modesty and warmth.

What does acupuncture feel like? Is it painful?

Clare uses an extremely gentle technique to insert the very thin acupuncture needles. In most cases the needles Clare uses are only 0.2 mm thick. This is not much thicker than a human hair and much thinner than a sewing needle. Only the finest quality, single-use, sterile needles are used. When the needle is first inserted you may feel a slight pinprick but it’s common that you may not even notice. After insertion there may be a feeling of warmth or heaviness or slight tingling or itching sensation in the area. Generally acupuncture is not painful or uncomfortable, but if you experience any concerns please tell Clare immediately and she will work with you to adjust the treatment.

How long are the treatments?

Please allow about 90 minutes for the initial consultation. Follow up sessions typically take 45 minutes – 1 hour.

During the consultation the needles are usually left in for 25-30 minutes, allowing time for your Qi to rebalance and you to relax. People often have an ‘acunap’ during this time. This is a nap where you aren’t fully awake or asleep, but when the acupuncture is finished you feel fully refreshed.

What should I expect after the treatment?

This can vary from person to person and depends on the condition being treated. Some may find a noticeable improvement within the first acupuncture session, while others may not notice its effects until afterwards. Overall most people find they feel very calm and relaxed after their treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Again this varies from person to person and depends on the severity of the condition. While you should notice an improvement relatively soon, often people may require repeated treatments for the full benefit to be felt. Generally Clare recommends 4-5 treatments, after which she will reassess your condition and can advise on possible ongoing treatment requirements.

How do I take the herbs?

Clare will provide full instructions on how to take each item. In general:

§ Granules - place 1 metric teaspoon (approximately 4g) in half a cup of warm water, stir to dissolve and drink

§ Pills/capsules - please refer to the number prescribed, but don’t be surprised if Clare suggests taking 12 or even more of the tiny pills she gives you

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the clinic.

Can I claim my treatments on my private health insurance?

Most major health funds cover acupuncture treatments. The level of cover can vary depending on your health fund. Please contact your health fund directly to find out. HICAPS services are available to allow rebates to be claimed immediately from most private health insurance agencies.

Is acupuncture and Chinese medicine regulated?

Chinese medicine, including herbal medicine and acupuncture, is highly regulated in Australia. Practitioners must have completed tertiary qualifications, including over 900 hours of clinical observation and practice. They are required to register with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) through the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA).
